Functional acknowledgement for outbound scenarios

Hello Experts,

We have the following scenario :

ECC -> SAP PO -> VAN -> EDI Customer

We want to setup functional acknowledgements for this setup. Our scenario uses EDIFACT message and not ANSIX12.

I have the following question :

We know that for inbound scenario's, we can setup functional acknowledgement with 997 FA message when we have ANSIX12.

But can we setup something same for EDIFACT messages too with outbound scenario ? If no, then do we have to create a separate flow that will accept EDIFACT CONTRL messages that will be sent separately to STATUS IDOC ?

Any other possible options that can be suggested ?
